Library

It had been on my wish list for several years: seeing the iconic cone of the TU Delft library. It is a design by MECANOO, an architectural firm from Delft, of which I have also discussed the Eurojust headquarters in The Hague. On one of our trips to the Netherlands it was finally time. It was overcast (typical weather from here) and we warmed up in the library in the coffee bar, highly recommended. A bonus was that a private concert was given a few meters away from us. We don’t have that in our libraries!

TU Delft

MECANOO was asked in 1993 by the Delft University of Technology to design a library for them. In the basement there is a large book depot, but that does not mean that you do not see books inside. Some of the million books they have here are placed in front of a deep blue wall. It gives a theatrical effect to the interior.

Cone

The cone, the symbol of engineering, is strikingly present in both the interior and the exterior. Outside he pierces the sloping green roof. You would see a ski slope in it if there is snow on it, but if there is snow on the roof, the roof is closed to the public! Inside, the cone provides daylight. The columns around it are not only constructive, they also provide ventilation, heating and lighting.
